چکیده

Hill, Ruth F. (Columbia University, New York, N.Y.). Relationship between ultraviolet sensitivity and ability to propagate ultraviolet-irradiated bacteriophage. J. Bacteriol. 88:1283-1287. 1964.-Mutants with a reduced ability to propagate ultraviolet-damaged bacteriophage T(1) were isolated from Escherichia coli strain B/r. The change in this ability varied from a slight to a very marked loss; the greater the loss, the greater was the ultraviolet sensitivity of the mutant. Reduced ability to propagate irradiated T(1) appears to be the more sensitive index of genetic change, because in one mutant there was no significant reduction in ultraviolet resistance. In a converse study, second-step mutants with an increased ultraviolet resistance were obtained from a mutant of E. coli B. This mutant is both unable to propagate irradiated T(1) and very ultraviolet-sensitive. The increased ultraviolet resistance of the second-step mutants was not accompanied by an increased ability to propagate irradiated T(1).

Levy, Stuart B. (Institut du Radium, Paris, France). Isologous interference with ultraviolet and X-ray irradiated bacteriophage T(2). J. Bacteriol. 87:1330-1338. 1964.-Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the interference capacity of an irradiated T(2) bacteriophage was made with ultraviolet and X-ray irradiation. Two different effects were found to explain the total interference picture in...

Action of bacteriophage T4 ultraviolet endonuclease on duplex DNA containing one ultraviolet-irradiated strand.

Previous studies have indicated that the ultraviolet endonuclease of bacteriophage T4 acts specifically at pyrimidine dimer sites in ultraviolet-irradiated DNA. At such sites the enzyme could conceivably catalyze endonucleolytic incision of the DNA either on the dimer-containing strand or on the strand directly opposite to the dimer. In the present work, a direct test of these alternatives was ...

Stage-dependent sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation in zygotes of the brown alga Fucus serratus.

Sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UV-A, lambda = 315-400 nm; plus UV-B, lambda = 280-315 nm) of zygotes of the brown alga Fucus serratus L. (Phaeophyta) has been assessed through effects on growth of developing germlings. Different stages of development were distinguished by considering 5 h periods of time after fertilisation. Both the stage of the zygote and the UV radiation condition...

Sperm fertilization capacity of Caspian salmon, Salmo trutta caspius under ultraviolet irradiation

The optimum dose of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to produce gynogenetic Caspian salmon, Salmo trutta caspius, with emphasis on the "Hertwig effect" and photoreactivation (PR) were investigated. The sperm of Caspian salmon was irradiated with UV at 2010 ? 200 ?w.cm-2 in different times including 0, 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 35 and 45 min and was allowed to fertilize normal ova; the fertilizati...

Development of bacteriophage in x-ray inactivated bacteria.

In previous studies (Labaw, Mosley, and Wyckoff, 1950a, b) from this laboratory we have shown that large yields of bacteriophage can be obtained from cultures of Escherichia coli which have been exposed to enough ultraviolet radiation to prevent their subsequent growth to form observable colonies when spread on fresh nutrient agar. In this work it was found that though the phosphorus metabolism...
